Chapter 16
Anna
I'm coloring with Emmalynn at my little desk in the office, trying my best to stay inside the lines of the picture she's given me. The tip of my tongue pokes out in concentration as I carefully fill in each section. Emmalynn giggles beside me, her small hands moving rapidly with a rainbow of crayons.
"You're doing great, Anna!" she encourages me, always so sweet.
I smile at her, feeling a warmth bloom in my chest. These quiet moments with her are precious, a stark contrast to the darkness I've known. My phone rings, an unknown number flashing on the screen. I quickly answer, not wanting to miss any updates while Rex is away.
"This is a collect call from an inmate, Rex, at the Multnomah County Jail. Will you accept the charges?"
The words hit me like a physical blow, stealing my breath. Rex⦠is in jail? Panic claws at my throat as my mind races. What could have happened? Is he okay? Without hesitation, I accept the charges, desperate to hear his voice. I grab Emmalynn's hand, crayons clattering to the floor as I jerk upright.
"Come on, sweetie, we need to go find uncle Jax." Her eyes widen at the urgency in my voice, but she doesn't question it, simply allowing me to lead her out of the office. My heart thunders in my ears as we hurry across the compound toward the clubhouse.
Rex's voice crackles through the phone. "Hey, it's me. How are you two doing?"
Relief washes over me at the sound of him, solid and reassuring despite the circumstances.
"We're okay. Em's been an angel as always." I swallow hard, forcing myself to remain calm for her sake. "Rex, what's happening? Why are you calling from⦠there?"
He exhales heavily. "Em can hear you right now?"
"Yeah, we are walking over to the clubhouse to find Jax. I figured he might need to know some of the things you're about to tell me."
âYeah, baby he does. Things got⦠complicated after. I can't go into details right now, but I'm not going to make it home today. I'm so sorry."
My steps falter at his words, dread settling like a stone in my stomach. Emmalynn tugs on my hand, peering up at me with those big, innocent eyes that haven't witnessed the true cruelty of this world yet. Not like I have.
"It's okay, I understand," I murmur into the phone. "Just be careful and take care of yourself, okay? We'll be here waiting."
âAnna, I need to ask you a favor. I need you to have Jax get ahold of my dad soon before he leaves the Portland area. He needs to get a lawyer for X, Dom, and me.â
I grip the phone tighter, Rex's words echoing in my ear as I make my way to the clubhouse with Emmalynn in tow. My heart races, fear and worry threatening to overwhelm me, but I force myself to focus on what needs to be done.
"Of course, I'll get in touch with Beau right away."
Rex's relief is palpable, even through the crackling prison phone line.
